UPDATE: Vistit HERE to download KWAAK to your Android phone!
There’s a good thing about working late at night, you find people working harder thank yourself, late at night. I was skimming the XDA Droix X forums looking to get in to some hacking cracking trouble and I found what I was looking for. User “andershizzle” of XDA is porting out KWAAK3 (AKA Quake3) Arena to many of the popular Android devices and I was one of the lucky ones to test this out on the Droid X..(Cough..FIRST!)
Any who, I have the PSX emulator on my Droid X and it was so-so in performance with a lot left to modify to perfection but when I loaded the Quake game up my jaw dropped. Welcome to the future of mobile gaming I thought. The FPS stayed at 30-40 and while under 7 bots in a large map under high game play it dropped around 20 fps which is still very playable. Granted if you have a phone that has a GPU like the Samsung series or the Droid X both sporting PowerVR GPU’s.
Controls are simple and on screen but if you have a trackball/pad or optical display (HTC Incredible) then it is definitely your playing field. The ease of use on movement with the optical pad made the game much more easier and enjoyable in the long run but the BIG screen and higher FPS on the Droid X gave me some tough decisions to kill my time. Either way it is another good day to be an Android user. Manufacturers giving us hardware we can use and an OS that is practically limitless helps us achieve a better user experience. Right now there are plans to have this mobile Quake to be running multi-player from one android phone to the other but we aren’t going to pressure the guy since we haven’t got a chance to even beat all the kill levels yet haha. Check the link after the break to check out the original thread and a link to the KWAAK3 Arena Site plus a first person hands on view of the game running on the Droid X.
