5 Must Have “Time Killer” Apps For Android!

| October 22, 2010 | Reply

Moving on after our Android Twitter Apps Round Robin, I wanted to continue to put together overviews of the best Android apps out there.  Today we are going to focus on 5 of my absolute favorite “must have” (FREE) Time killers!  Check out the overview and pics below and be sure to leave some comments with your favorite Time Killers!

Finger Bowling

Premise/Design:

This is a full screen bowling game where you use your finger or thumb to guide the ball where you want it.  There are 3 levels built into this free version.  The paid version has more levels, but I promise that most of you won’t need it!

Game Play:

As soon as you open the app you’re ready to go on screen, just slide your finger or thumb where you want the ball to go, it’s that simple.  At first I thought this game was far too simple.  My first game was a 279 and after a couple tries I had a perfect game (300).  Then I realized that there was another level.  The second level which is called “tilted” adds some curve to the ball.  The on screen arrows show you which way the ball will curve so you can easily adjust.  But it’s not that easy.  My best score here was 190.  Once you finish this level you get to the third level called “twisted” which is ridiculous.  Twisted is basically level 2 with more curve intensity.  My best score here was 120.  Sad, I know.  There are no settings to change, just 3 levels of play, but the app will keep track of your scores for you and you can submit them online also.

Overall:

I absolutely recommend this game to anyone who looking for a solid Time Killer that could entertain you for a couple hours easy.  While there is a paid version, I will be using this free version until I get a perfect round of 900.

Instant Buttons

Premise/Design:

This is a free soundboard app providing 1 touch access to well over 100 random sound clips.  There are a lot of these floating around on the market but this one is by far a must have for its insane variety, sound quality, and overall UI and design.  The buttons themselves look like old school arcade buttons which I love.

Function:

The app opens up to several multi-colored buttons (red, yellow, blue, green, purple, and orange) with descriptions underneath.  There is no theme here as these clips vary from pop culture, to music, movie clips, etc.  Click a button, here a sound nothing earth shattering here, but I love that there are so many.  However my favorite feature with this app is that it comes with a widget that lets you drop your favorite sounds right onto any of your home screens.  You can also change the color of the buttons if you don’t like the color associated with them in the app itself.  Let me give you an example:  Your friend tells a horrible joke, why not click the “crickets” sound and let him or her sit in the silence they deserve.

Overall:

I love this app.  Yes there are a lot of soundboard apps available for various different categories, but this app has it all.  I love the fact that I can have a bunch of them ready to go as fast as I can change home screens using the included widget.  Now I understand this is not something you can use sitting in the Doctor’s or Dentist’s office, but this is definitely one of my favorite Time Killers.

Pinball

Premise/Design:

This is a free pinball game that has everything you need to help pass the time.  The design is fairly basic, but the app itself looks and works very well.  There aren’t any options or settings to change, but there really does need to be.  For a free pinball app it has everything you need.

Game Play:

The app opens up to a screen showing 5 different table options which change the face of the table and everything inside of it.  You can choose from the following levels, Bowling, Underwater, Soccer, Invaders, and Andro which features a huge “Andy” background with several Android icon deterrents.  Playing the game on your device is just like playing for real.  You swipe down the launcher to get going and tap the area around the paddles to move them.  This game is a lot of fun and definitely a good way to spend some unwanted free time.

Overall:

I recommend this game to any pinball fan, looking for a free app to help pass the time.  The game is very addicting, and with 5 tables to choose from you’ll essentially never get bored of it.  You can view your own scores as well as post and see the scores of others.  I will not be telling any of you where I rank, but my personal favorite is the soccer table.  Gooooooooooal!

Basketball Shot

Premise/Design:

This is a free Basketball game designed to look just like the real thing we see in the arcades.  The UI is gorgeous perfectly mimicking the popular real life version.  Simply flick your thumb or finger on the ball towards the basket and let them fly.  This is a simple, yet very time consuming game as you try to advance to higher levels, and surpass previous scores.

Game Play:

The app itself opens up to a short menu screen to start the game, check sound settings, find more from the developer, purchase the paid version and send a shout out anywhere on your phone like Twitter, Text, Email, etc.  Once you open the game you’re ready to start shooting as the clock starts instantly.  You move through the levels by achieving certain scores as dictated.  Every level you move forward becomes harder and harder with less time to shoot, and a moving backboard.

Overall:

I love playing this game in real life.  Whenever I am around one I will always flock to it and try to win something.  The fact that I can have it on my device is completely awesome.  Nothing groundbreaking here, just a simple yet very addicting Time Killer that I always look to when I have extra time.

Mini Golf Oid

Premise/Design:

This is a classic miniature golf game with a ton of extras.  The design is great.  The graphics are simple but still look really good between the sand traps, the water, and the green itself.  Tons of settings and options that surely do not disappoint making this my favorite mini golf game available in the market today.

Game Play:

The app is very fluent, fast, and seems very realistic.  You slide your finger or thumb in the direction you want the ball to go and drag to set your power.  The free course is relatively easy and yet still challenging at times.  I also downloaded the Medium course which is also free and definitely gets more challenging.  There are a ton of settings and different courses available to download right from the app which is really convenient.  The additional courses range from Medium to Hard difficulty with a Mountain Paradise and alphabet game available which is also really cool.

Overall:

I strongly recommend this game to anyone looking for a mini golf game, or anyone looking for a good reason to be unproductive.  You can easily get lost in the game because of all the different challenges and levels available.  The game play is awesome.  Mini Golf Oid is exactly what you would want in a mini golf game with no lag during play whatsoever.  This is currently my favorite Time Killer!
