I know it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Acer is releasing an Android tablet, considering everybody and their grandma seems to be throwing their hats in the ring. But I just didn’t expect the second Honeycomb tablet release to be from Acer!
Acer announced that starting today you can go to Best Buy and pre-order their Wi-Fi-only Acer Iconia Tab A500 Android tablet. This 10.1 inch tablet is equipped with Honeycomb (Android 3.0), 1280×800 TFT WXGA screen resolution and packs a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 250 processor. It weighs in at 1.69 lbs (slightly heavier than the Xoom’s 1.6 lbs) and is .52 inches thick. The 16:10 aspect ratio display includes support for 720p video playback and can output 1080p video via its built-in HDMI port. Looking at specs alone it looks like this tablet has what it takes to compete with the likes of the Motorola Xoom and iPad 2. No word on whether Acer has fiddled with Honeycomb and implemented their own custom UI elements, but all of the screenshots show pure vanilla Honeycomb goodness.
Europe is getting pretty much the same exact tablet but sold as the Packard Bell Liberty Tab (Packard Bell?!), also made by Acer. You can check out a review of the European model over at NotebookItalia (will have to translate the page, unless you are fluent in Italian).
The Iconia Tab A500 will start shipping on April 24th along with several accessories (bluetooth keyboard, dock with IR remote, case, power adapter) It will be priced at an acceptable $450.
So, who’s running out to grab one?!
