The picture above is Steve Sasson who invented the digital camera. The device you see in his and is the camera itself. If you look and see what appears to be a cassette tape in the back then you are pretty close to correct. It was a digital tape. It was the only way he had to take the image from what would now be the ram onto a permanent storage.
