The Raspberry Pi foundation (the logo looks just how youd think) has come up witha novel idea. Take the innards of a smartphone, throw ubuntu linux on it, package it nicely and sell it as a pc for kids…for $25! OLPC is pretty much been a disappointment since the $100 laptop cost about $200 in the end, but this is a very promising idea. And with the technology getting better and better, I can imagine within a year seeing dual core computers this small. Specs of the current idea are as follows:
- 700MHz ARM11
- 128MB of SDRAM
- OpenGL ES 2.0
- 1080p30 H.264 high-profile decode
- Composite and HDMI video output
- USB 2.0
- SD/MMC/SDIO memory card slot
- General-purpose I/O
- Open software (Ubuntu, Iceweasel, KOffice, Python
Not great by any means but for an inexpensive option its not too bad. And teaches kids some linux! Head on over to the company website for more information.
