iPad 3 to launch at current price point – iPad 2 to be discontinued?

Apple’s Fall media event is coming up quickly (most likely September) and we’re starting to see iPhone/iPad rumors emerge more and more. The latest rumor we’ve seen is on the iPad 3.

According to Taiwan Economic News, Apple’s third-generation iPad could be set to launch at the iPad 2′s current price points. Upon release, Apple will discount the iPad 2 in order to clear out inventory. This wouldn’t be surprising since the original iPad was discounted by $100, even as much as $300 by some third-party retailers, when the iPad 2 was released. The iPad 3 will supposedly sport a high-resolution Retina Display.

What would come as a surprise is if the rumor is right about the iPad 3 being launched before this year’s holiday season. That would break Apple’s normal cycle of releasing new mobile devices annually (iPad 2 was launched in March of this year). This all is contrary of earlier reports that Apple would be releasing an “iPad Pro” model, which would feature the Retina Display, that would be sold alongside of the iPad 2.
