It appears Apple has changed their policy on in-app purchases. As a result preventing Google’s eBook app to allow their users to buy books from directly inside the app. ¬†This email was sent out to all current Google Books users:

Dear Google eBooks customer,

We are writing to let you know about important changes to your Google Books app for your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. Due to Apple’s new policies, you can no longer shop for Google eBooks within the app.

But don’t worry, you can install the Google eBookstore on your iOS device using the easy steps in this email, and continue to buy the books you want quickly and easily. For further assistance and more detailed, step-by-step, visual instructions, please visit our Help Center article or you can contact us.

For iPhone/iPod touch users: Install the Google eBookstore

  1. Open your Safari web browser
  2. Go to the address: books.google.com/ebooks
  3. Tap the bookmark symbol at the bottom of the screen
  4. Tap “Add to Home Screen”
  5. Tap “Add”
  6. To shop at the Google eBookstore, simply tap the bookstore icon. Any ebooks you purchase or download will automatically appear in your Google Books app for you to read.

Happy e-reading from Google Books!

Sincerely,
The Google Books Team

No details on exactly what changes occurred, or why, but you have to wonder if this may be a move to try to distance Google from their devices. ¬†Though I’m sure this change effects every developer of iOS who would have used in-app purchases in their apps.
