The Back To The Future Shoes Have Become A Reality [Video]

| September 8, 2011 | Reply

I was 11 years old when Back to the Future II was released in 1989 (man I’m old) and remember how awesome it was to see Marty McFly riding around on his hoverboard. That was the future (2015, to be exact), and kids everywhere were excited that somewhere down the road THEY will be swooping around the neighborhood on their very own hoverboards! There were even rumors that hoverboards were already in development and we would be riding them even sooner than we though!  In addition to the hoverboard there were those sweet, futuristic Nike shoes that McFly was rocking. If you’re old enough to remember, you know you wanted a pair! I mean, c’mon, they laced up all by themselves!

Shoes and Hoverboard in-movie

Fast forward to 2011 and there’s still no hoverboard – But thanks to Nike, the shoes have become a reality! They’re called the Nike Air Mag and you can get yourself a pair starting tonight at 11:30PM EST.

The upper of the shoe is made of reinforced mesh. The outer sole is lined with LED panels that light up, all futuristic-like. They are rechargeable and are said to stay lit for up to 5 hours. There’s also a electroluminescent Nike logo in the strap. It’s pretty much the exact replica of the pair from the movie, with a few slight tweaks to add more support and comfort – And the auto-lace feature didn’t make the cut (boo), even though the patent that Nike filed last year detailed such functionality. Ok, so maybe they’re not something that I would be caught wearing around town (although I’m sure some would, more power to you!), but they’d at least be a pretty sweet collector’s item. I stated earlier that you would be able to buy yourself a pair starting tonight – well, there’s a catch of course. Nike will only be making 1500 pairs of the Air Mag, each pair will be put up for auction on nikemag.eBay.com. I’m assuming that they will end up going for hefty price tags that are out of reach to most people. But that’s okay because they’re being made for a great cause, as the proceeds will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation in the hopes of finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease.

It will be interesting to see how much the Mags end up going for, I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on the auction to find out.

Now that we have the shoes out of the way ahead of schedule, can someone please get on the hoverboard thing?! If we don’t have a fully functional, mass produced board by 2015 I will be highly disappointed.

UPDATE: The auction is now live and we can see how much the shoes are going for. Right now they’re at anywhere between $4,100 and $5,600. We can also see that size availability is from size 7 to 13. Below are a couple more promo videos about the shoes, and one of Marty McFly strapping his pair on in the movie:
