This weekend was poised to be an unconventional one for Android aficionados everywhere – Most were actually eager for it pass quickly, due to the ensuing Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Samsung Galaxy Nexus (or Nexus Prime, depending on who you talk to) announcement that was scheduled for the upcoming Tuesday. Now, with the latest news, it’s looking like everybody will enjoy the weekend as usual.
Samsung and Google have sent out a joint announcement stating that the announcement of the latest version of Android, along with the flagship phone set to showcase the OS, has been postponed:
Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.
Excitement has been building for the October 11th Samsung Unpacked, where the two products were set to be unveiled, especially after some leaked images of the device and OS – As well as a nice “something big” teaser video released by Samsung. Now, Android fans will have to wait just a bit longer. Maybe not much longer, though, as Google’s Eric Schmidt has promised that they would launch by November (although, he said that back in early September, before this latest news).
Stay tuned, we’ll keep you posted.
UPDATE: New information has been released that confirms something that many have been thinking – The event was postponed because of the death of Steve Jobs. AndroidAndMe received a statement from Samsung PR Director, Kim Titus, that reads:
Samsung and Google have decided to postpone the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event during the CTIA in San Diego, previously scheduled for Oct. 11. Under the current circumstances, both parties have agreed that this is not the appropriate time for the announcement of a new product. We would ask for the understanding of our clients and media for any inconvenience caused. We will announce a new date and venue in due course

In addition to that, CNET got confirmation directly from Google:
We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs’s passing.
So, while the event is indeed postponed, it’s sounding like Android lovers shouldn’t fret about the device and OS being delayed past when they were initially scheduled to be released (a date which is unknown thus far). Maybe the event will just be held a little closer to public availability now?
