Microsoft Plays Cops And Robbers; Raid Office Buildings To Seize Botnet Servers

| March 26, 2012 | Reply

I am not sure why MS has been given any authority to raid anything. But it appears they are working with US marshals on raiding some servers that are using the Zeus malware infections to steal identities. It would make more sense to me if the marshals were using MS as advisers for some criminal activities. I guess the way it works is by MS filing a civil suit reporting that the botnets violate some MS trademarks and they seek permission to take control of their command and control structures. So will this stop use of the botnets and the zeus malware? No, and Microsoft admits that. Maybe the digital crimes unit over at MS just needed something to do?
