It’s come as no surprise that Apple finally made their own maps app for iOS. Google refused to give up turn by turn and 3d maps for the OS and it was a major downfall to stock vs. stock comparisons with Android. Amazon uses the Android operating system as the base for the Kindle Fire, but doesn’t want you to know that. The Kindle Fire looks nothing like Android and has no access to Google apps or the Play Store out of the box. Amazon is making a couple new tablets and it appears they may include something the Fire lacked – GPS. Amazon has purchased UpNext, a 3d mapping company for $2.8 million. That is a pretty low price if Amazon is indeed planning on adding navigation to future tablets or a phone.
