Google Responds To The Apple vs Samsung Verdict: “Meh”. Here’s Why

Google doesn’t seem too worried about the verdict in the Apple vs Samsung lawsuit. Here is what they said:

The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don’t relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the U.S. Patent Office. The mobile industry is moving fast and all players — including newcomers — are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don’t want anything to limit that.

It could be for a couple of reasons Google took this stance. First, is because the company is right. The AOSP core of Android doesn’t really seem to be affected by this. Maybe the pinch to zoom, but that is about it. Most of the mobile patents that Apple has were indeed invented before Apple patented them. So the patent office is trying to act to save the mobile industry from eating itself alive. Next, is because this might be good for Google. The company(Motorola) has just filed suit against Apple. They can use this decision as a base for the idea that companies who infringe should be punished.

Overall, Samsung is pretty much to blame. With the internal emails and the warning from Google about what they were doing Samsung knew they had little chance of coming out of this suit the winner. The iPhone 3g(and 4 to a point) and the Galaxy S looked alike and Touchwiz only helps that. To me, this is just another way for Google to let manufacturers know they should keep the stock OS. If they do, Google has already gone over patents to make sure there aren’t infringements. If you are thinking “what about Motorola which Google owns”, well they have to keep some things the same as before Motorola was purchased. I certainly hope LG is taking note, because the UI they use sure looks a lot like Touchwiz.
