Microsoft surprised many people when they announced the upgrade to Windows 8 would cost just $40. All previous versions of windows would run you $100-200 for an upgrade. Microsoft also showed off a new tablet that intrigued many people. It looks clean and polished and perfect for the new UI MS is pushing into Win8. When announced MS didn’t mention cost but did say it would be priced in line with other tablets. MS also stated the pro version of the tablet would line up with the cost of Ultrabooks. This left us thinking about $349-499 for the base tablet and $599-799 for the pro. Now Engadget is reporting MS may be willing to take a major loss on the base tablet and sell it off at $199. If that happens, they will sell like crazy. It will launch them into the tablet market quickly and should be more successful than the Windows Phone has been so far. The tablet game has changed since MS announced the surface tablet. The Nexus 7 appears to be a success, and Apple is rumored to be launching a lower cost 7 inch tablet as well. On top of that, you can buy the iPad2 for just $299. While I am not really buying into the rumors, it does make me think. With the new app store in Windows 8, MS should be able to make some money back on the tablets they would lose in base sales. It would also be the lowest cost 10 inch tablet you could buy. I don’t see MS being this drastic but I certainly hope they are.
