The presidential race is on which means we Americans get bombarded everywhere by ads asking for our votes. I can’t speak for everyone, but I know when the ad starts, I tune out. I just can’t stand to listen to someone tell me how horrible the other party is, then tell me nothing about what they stand for. Either way, when I put in my headphones and want to escape life for a bit, I tend to get annoyed when it’s interrupted. Now it seems that listening to Pandora is no longer a musical escape from political ads either. This year, for the first time, Pandora has allowed political parties to take part in targeted email sharing. Generally targeted ads can really help companies to reach their targeted audience, but for sake of the political campaign, it seems borderline stereotypical. Why stereotypical, you ask? Most users on Pandora that are fans of country music, are being targeted solely with Mitt Romney ads. Those who are rap, hip hop, and rock listeners are getting ads for Obama only. While the absence of a 3 minute attack on the opposing party is nice, you’re instead given a 3 step process to opt into the ad. For the next 4 months, I think I’ll be exclusively using Google Play.
